    Hi,
I'm type #2 diabetic on medication & insulin, what amasses me  is the charges for these containers to drop off our sharps into.
Couple of years ago I was able to pay 2 containers for the price of one,Now ,not only does it cost the same for One sharp container-- the price varies with different pharmacies.??
Not only is that absurd, why do we have to " purchase" these sharps?
After all pharmacies carry a very big special bin in  their premises for these sharps,   why is there the need for us to purchase "specific containers" ,surly these used sharps can be disposed-off in any sealed plastic containers.& drop-off at the pharmacies.
Our pockets have already be hurt with the increased of diabetic medication rising yearly ,especially when I'm not on any concession
    Thank you

Hi, I am Type 2 on meds and insulin and have been for over 6 years.  I now live in Moreton Bay Regional Council area and I visit the local 'dump' where I am GIVEN a new  sharps container  and directed where I can drop the old full one, all for no charge.  Perhaps if you contact your local council they may offer the same deal, all I had to do initially was show that I was a rate payer or prove who I was.  Good luck.

    Hi Margaret,

Can you please send me a private message with your location and contact details? We can then provide you with customised information about the free disposal of sharps in your area and where access points are to purchase and compare the price of the sharps containers.

    Thanks

Can anyone please tell me what the law (not just the advice) is with regard to the disposal of used needles and finger pricking devices?

As Brian has asked, I too would like to know the legal standing about disposal of needles and finger pricking devices.
I do know that I have to carry a medical certificate with my drivers licence which has to be renewed yearly. The law on this is a bit ambiguous but I think your doctor has final say.
Is there anyone who can provide legal advice for each state.

Thank you for that information Ian, In this instance, in Queensland the law is as follows

the prescribed procedures for the disposal of a hypodermic syringe or needle shall be as follows-

    1. by placing the hypodermic syringe or needle in a rigid wall, puncture resistant container and that container is sealed or securely closed in such a manner that its contents are incapable of causing injury to any person;

So as I understand this the Flex Pen ink itself is a rigrid walled, puncture resistant container as is the syringe needle container. So even if you leave a needle on the Flex Pen surely it can just be thrown in the waste bin.

Needles to prick your finger might be another matter depending on what type you use. For some you would require a sealed, puncture resistant container.

    Regard
    Brian

The Flex Pen is much like the Byduroen that I use the issue with the needle is that the protective cap can come off and possibly cause injury/infection to a 3rd party.  In my opinion and because of the structure of the device only the needle cap needs to go in a sharps container. However the device instructions are quite clear ( for both devices) dispose of in a sharps container which is what I do. QLD local health services Centers have a 24 hour disposal bin and will during business hours let you have as many large containers as you need for free. My local one is at Lawnton.

    Hi Ian,
Tank you for the information.Yes I do used Flexi-pen,& Only dispose the pen after it's empty. But the cap/ with the sharp needle ,I disposed them into sharp containers - as it does pose some risks of injury should anyone come into contact with it.
I'm so glad to know that QldHealth Center do provide any amount of  sharp containers free of charge--I will get onto it.
    cheers

Thanks Ian for that very useful information. I have looked on local council web sites and found different councils have different regulations/policies on disposal too. So Brian it may be worth while checking your local councils web site to see what they say about sharps disposal.
Has anyone been able to find information about medical certificates for driving for diabetics for each state. I am mainly interested in Qld. My sisters doctor said she needed on on tablets while mine didn't but I have to have one while on insulin.
