  • 1.  Inserting cgm in hot humid weather

    Posted 06-02-2024 09:11

    Hi everyone

i just thought someone might like a suggestion on attaching cgm in hot humid weather.

i cleaned the attachment site on back of my arm then pressed a cold pack on site for a few minutes to move the blood away from the skin surface, wiped site then attached cgm with no blood leak, n,b., I also take blood thinners daily.

the previous time i attached g6 to tummy without using cold pack, blood leaked from sensor insert point, i wiped the blood and cleaned the site using the sensor for about 5 days, it worked ok but was not as accurate as they usually are, showing 5 (perfect) when should be 4.1, and i was symptomatic of low bgl.

AMSL were not so good with advice on this, no advice on cooling skin when inserting cgm, sent me their guidelines (mg/dL) etc.

    regards

    Hi Timothy

Great tip. I ve been using the Dexcom CGM system for a number of years G4-6 and not had a problem with site bleed . I've only ever used abdomen as site placement never upper arm- do you find this site just as effective?

    Hi Jennifer

    great to hear from you.

back of upper arm is the best site, so that when sleeping there is little pressure on sensor. When you notice anyone using any brand of cgm you will notice this looks to be the site most often used.

    hope this helps.

    cheers tim

    Hi All,

I'm wondering if I'm the only person who finds it extremely difficult to insert the cgm (Medtronic 780g) onto the back of the arm without help.  I know it's probably not the preferred site but front of arm is my preferred spot.  Unfortunately the other option of the stomach is also not too good because over the years I have so many marks on my stomach trying to find a good site is becoming limited.

Heather, you'll find YouTube videos showing how to access the back of your upper arm without help.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCJaJCplA7Y

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bJkRYtUaJQ    (This bloke is quirky & interesting.)

Apologies if you already tried this, but:

Stand with arms by your side,

Bend your elbow so that your lower-arm is horizontal and upper-arm remains vertical,

Rotate your shoulder to raise your upper-arm to the horizontal and your upper-arm is vertical .

The "back" of your arm will now be facing downward which gives good access to insert the sensor with an upward motion.

(P.S. I use Libre 2 on the back of my upper-arm according to the above method.  Its very secure in that location and it requires a lot of force to remove it after 14 days.)

Thank you Timothy. I have had two significant bleeds when inserting new CGMs over the summer months. Had no idea why as it had never happened before. I began using CGM last May so this is the first summer with CGM.

I had no warning about this from Dexcom or the Clinic I attend.

So logical. I shall be arming my self with a cold pack when next I change the CGM.

    Again, thank you.

    Hi Julie-et al

Yes I've occasionally had significant bleed when inserting Dexcom G6 -(into the abdomen) The last time I had to change sensors, I lost two in a row from excessive bleeding, as Ive found that they won't work properly if they're bled into, to any degree.  So I'm grateful for the hint from Timothy to icepack the area prior to insertion.

I have also found with my G6 that quite often it will start to give incorrect readings up to three days out from the due date for replacement. Crazy lows mostly - which as Im, feeling perfectly fine, I check with a fingerprick - but its really annoying not to one able to rely on your sensor and to then have to change it days early.

Has anyone else had this issue?

    Cheers

    Ann

    Hi Ann

You are not alone on that; the  readings that are not matching how we feel, i.e., i feel good but app shows i am low, or vice versa,  just replace, easier than ringing amsl & talking to a techie in Manila & going thru all the rig ma role.

AMSL were very good a while back, ring in & talk to a techie with good English, they must  have moved all tech support to Manila.

Still, i  enjoy the convenience of cgm, all the best
