Yes, advised weeks ago by my pharmacist. There is a notice from September on the TGA website.

I have been advised that there will be supply shortages until new year.  Pharmacy is holding limited stock for diabetic regular customers but only low dose pens available.

Hi my GP has given me a script for Ozempic! My BGLs are all over the place and we don’t know why.
I have not filled it because I know it’s not available. My question is what are people using instead? The alternative suggested from them cost nearly $100/needle and I can’t afford that on our limited income. It there an affordable alternative ?

You could ask your GP to prescribe Trulicity in the short term but there is no guarantee that it will be any easier to obtain. It has limited availability atm (but better than Ozempic) but if a number of Ozempic users switch to Trulicity, no doubt supply will become more restricted.

There was a notice posted on the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) website about Ozempic and the shortage.

"The pharmaceutical company that supplies Ozempic, Novo Nordisk, has recently advised the TGA and the Ozempic Medicine Shortage Action Group that supply will be limited for the rest of 2023 and throughout 2024. "

Please read the whole item for full details but also keep in touch with your pharmacy as, sometimes, limited supply might sneak through.

It has been suggested that I use my "blue" pen sparingly, i.e. see if I can survive on a half dose rather than the full 1mg but the last time I tried that, I did find my blood sugar started to creep up on me.  (I suppose half dose and STRICT diet, etc might be a short-term possibility.)

    https://www.tga.gov.au/safety/shortages/medicine-shortage-alerts/update-prescribers-advised-not-start-new-patients-ozempic

My pharmacist strongly suggested having a talk with my endocrinologist and GP as the "alternatives" such as Trulicity are also in short supply so, no real solution as yet.

I have gone to fortnightly doses rather than weekly doses; figured it was easier than trying to estimate a half dose using my blue pen! So far so good, BGL control is still ok. Unfortunately, my last pen is about to run out! Half of nothing is nothing!😢

Current information is always available in the TGA Medicine Shortages database. - Medicine Shortages Information Initiative | Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA)

Currently short supply until December 2024.

AGAIN in intermittent supply? Don't you mean STILL?

FWIW I have always been able to source Trulicity as an alternative.

I had a consult with my Endocrinologist last week and I've had to go back to injecting insulin four times a day. He is hoping when I see him next March that the prospect of Ozempic being back to full supply will be about then. In the meantime I've also had to change off Ryzodeg as it is temporarily unavailable as they are changing  it's format.

The struggle is real especially when my needles weren't available for a week or two.

What does your endo know that the TGA doesn't.

And did he offer you any alternative? - ie Trulicity, which while in short supply is considerably more obtainable than Ozempic.

My Endo knows I’m allergic to Trulicity , as an alternative I’m having to take four injectioms of Novorapid plus Optisulin Solar Star and one tablet of Januvia. It is common knowledge of shortages & I would assume he is keeping up to date on products changes as they affect his patients.

I do feel for people who live away from major centres and can't shop around.

I have a local call list of about 10 pharmacists. It usually takes me no more than three phone calls to locate my Trulicity as I have some time ago worked out the most likely sources

Interestingly there are three Chemist Warehouses nearby, but only one of them has ever had a supply.

(Edit) Got Trulicity on the first call today. Only once in the last twelve months have I had to wait a week. I'm in Brisbane south side.

Checked all around and they all said that they wont get a supply until February or March however some have the lower dose so you would need a new script for that.

    Hi Alan,

Thanks for the offer but Ryzodeg is no longer working for me so I've had to swap to Optisulin and added a third dose of Novorapid. I have a 'fridge of unopened Ryzodeg if I could find someone who could use it I'd be happy as if I return it to the Chemist they will only destroy it.

As I live in a regional area I have a call list for chemists within 300km's when my medications are unavailable although my chemist gives me the heads up when he is notified of shortages

I live in Cairns and I cannot get Ozempic here either.  I was speaking to the Pharmacist and she told me that she thinks it's the pen that is the supply issue.
My comment was, " well we can control a drone on Mars from earth but we can't manage to get their supply chain right?"  No Comment was the stern reply!

The pen is certainly part of the issue. I understand they are made by someone else, and that supplier suffered serious manufacturing equipment failure some time ago. But worldwide demand for the drug for weight loss (originally triggered in the USA by social media "influencers") is out of control.

You wonder why they can't supply as a penfill cartridge like they do with other insulins. They would need an updated version of the reusable pen calibrated for Ozempic doses.

I don't like the idea of throwing away the entire pen after use which seems so wasteful. I have used penfills for my Levemir for years and love the concept.

If you search the internet, it looks like it's more a shortage of semaglutide due to the "over demand" of off-script prescribing.

Look, I have sympathy for obese people but, maybe, they should consider other, more long-lasting alternatives like stomach sleeve or bypass surgery.

Semaglutide is good as long as you stay on it but, once you stop, the weight will come back.

Now, if, indeed, it isn't the drug but the delivery mechanism, why can't we get a bit "old fashioned" and go back to vials and syringes, being that it's just once a week?
