We hope you have gained some valuable knowledge this month - by reading our posts, attending the webinar on Wednesday, reading a post by a fellow member or perhaps downloading some of the resources. Don't forget if you haven't done this you can always go back and do it anytime.

What did you gain by participating in foot month?

Our topic of the month for October is diabetes and complications, where we will cover a variety of diabetes related complications. In the meantime don't forget you can email us anytime via community@diabetesaustralia.com.au or start a thread in the forum and ask any questions.

We are here for you, now and into the future.

    Take care!

Hi Community Team, Natasha, Ange and Erin,
Some of the most frustrating complications about  Type1 diabetes are the things that are uncontrollable and not fully understood by the medical fraternity, that is complications not associated with blood glucose control.  Many Type1's have these comorbid  complications as they just appear and are not related with high blood sugars that  effect feet, eyes ulcers etc etc.
Over  30 years ago I developed Crohn's disease, an autoimmune disease associated with Type1's, which I would not wish on any of our members due to the use of steroids, incompatible with insulin. There are more recent advancements with Crohn's medications that do not use steroids, yet still both  diseases are not complimentary. Celiac disease  is also associated with Type1's. My son has developed Crohn's so it's genetic. He has not thankfully got Type1. Other complications such as  a massive lipoma on the left side of my stomach in addition to, Dupuytren's contracture on both hands started to appear about  40 years ago even though my blood glucose has been in the suggested range.
Other comorbid Type1 conditions can be coeliac disease, hypothyroidism/ hyperthyroidism and Addison disease, eating disorders and depression.
I'm sure that the I am not the only one with these Type1 problems that just come along to challenge us. It would be interesting to know about other types one  comorbid conditions.

    Hi Michael,

Thanks for your reply. There are certainly many, as you mention, co-morbidity conditions/complications when it comes to type 1 diabetes and we hope to cover some of these for you during the month.

Also there will be a live Q&A meeting on the forum later in the month with one of our health professionals from my office in Hobart. The Q&A will be with Myles who is a registered nurse and credentialled diabetes educator, make sure you register and have your questions ready for Myles, he is highly qualified and a fountain of knowledge.

In the meantime you may find this blog post interesting on the Diabetes Australia website on type 1 diabetes and Addison's disease, you will find it here.

If there is anything else you would like to hear about please let us know.

    Have a wonderful Monday!

    Best wishes, Ange.
