    Hi Members,

The Diabetes Australia Research Program has been supporting outstanding diabetes research across Australia for more than 35 years.  In just over a decade, the Program has awarded more than $36 million in diabetes research grants to Australian researchers. This year we are providing $3.7 million to support research. As you are aware supporting diabetes research is so important. Research creates hope. Hope for a cure, but also hope for better treatments, better technology, and better support.

Last week, as part of National Diabetes Week, we were proud to announce funding for some extraordinary researchers.

    Queensland – 11 July

In Queensland, five leading diabetes researchers will share in almost $370,000 funding from Diabetes Australia to fund vital medical research.

Projects including new treatments for diabetes-related foot ulcers, therapies to reduce the impact of COVID-19 on people living with diabetes and new treatments for diabetes-related heart disease.

The funding for projects in Queensland was awarded to:

    • * Professor Usman Malabu, James Cook University, for research on Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy for Prevention of Diabetic Foot Ulcer Recurrence
    • * Dr Heena Akbar, Queensland University of Technology for research of the Effectiveness of a Pasifika Women's Diabetes Wellness Program
    • * Dr Denuja Karunakaran, University of Queensland for Therapeutic knockdown of ripk1 to treat atherosclerotic complications of type 1 diabetes research
    • * Dr Melissa Reichelt, University of Queensland for Targeting cavin-1 via gene therapy in a model of metabolic/low-level chronic stress
    • * Associate Professor Katharina Ronacher, University of Queensland for Harnessing Oxidised Cholesterols to Reduce Susceptibility to COVID-19 in Obesity and Diabetes.

New South Wales – 13 July

$470,000 was announced during National Diabetes Week to support research in New South Wales for six projects. This announcement was made at NSW Government House at the NSW Diabetes Australia Research Program grant presentation. The event included the presentation of certificates to six researchers and their teams, including five general grants and the prestigious Type 2 Diabetes Millennium Award.

The funding for projects in New South Wales was awarded to:

    Type 2 Diabetes Millennium Award

    * Associate Professor Sonia Saad, University of Sydney: Assessing urinary tubular cells in chronic kidney disease by deep learning – early diagnostics without kidney biopsy.

     General Grants

    * Dr Yanchuan Shi, Garvan Institute of Medical Research: A Novel Role of Neuropeptide Y in Salt-triggered Thermogenesis and Energy Expenditure

    * Dr Amanda Brandon, University of Sydney: How do diet, gender and obesity interact to regulate insulin sensitivity and metabolism in mice?

    * Dr Alexis Diaz-Vegas, University of Sydney: Role of the mitochondrial protease miPEP in insulin resistance in adipocytes

    * Dr Ashish Misra, University of Sydney: Identification of molecular and cellular mechanisms linking diabetes with atherosclerosis.

    * Dr Jacky Stoeckli, University of Sydney: Novel Insights into Lipid Homeostasis through analysis of Human Genetic Mutations.

    Tasmania – 15 July

At Government House in Hobart, Dr Dino Premilovac was recognised for his outstanding contribution to diabetes research, and we were privileged to hear about the research he is undertaking at the University of Tasmania.

I thank these amazing researchers, and all of our diabetes research community, who every day, give us hope for a better future for people with diabetes.

    Kind Regards
