I have been a T2D for mor than 40 years and have never been an inpatient. Recently my GP changed my medication to further improve my BGL. This caused an adverse reaction leading to UTI and landed me in hosp twice. Problem solved but now on part insulin.

Will be travelling  overseas week after and an online insurancequote for medical part of insurance found it  prohibitive because of hospitalisation and insulin. Can any forum member recommend an understanding insurance agency that deals with T2D travels. Best of all is there an agency with an underwriter I can speak to as online ticking boxes can be brutal for quotes. My email michaelkoh888@optusnet.com.au

    Hi Michael,

I have been on insulin as a T2 for over 10 years and have travelled extensively in that time. The T2 on insulin has not been an inhibitor to getting travel insurance but I have other issues--heart etc--that complicate matters a bit. Some insurers will not cover me so you need to shop around.

I have found Insure and Go will cover me--but at a cost, particularly if travelling to the US. Your recent hospitalisation is probably impacting your cover but try them to see if they'll cover you.

    Good Luck!

    Robert

    Tks for your prompt response.

You are right as Insure and Go does cover but at a high price. My recent hospitaliton made it worse.

Which insurers should I shop around. I have a couple of days before I need to finalise.

Will share my experiences with u.

    Regards

    Michael

    Michael,

I suspect all options will be expensive--my challenge was to get someone who would actually cover me.

Others I have used in the past were Southern Cross Travel insurance (excellent) and World Nomads. Both worth a try.

Note that many of the insurers you come across use the same underwriters (often Allianz) so are effectively the same. Insure and Go use Mitsui (I think) and Southern Cross underwrite themselves I believe.

I'd be most interested in the outcome of your research--I hope it's successful.

    Robert

World Trave Nomads does not have cover for those over 70.

In the end I bough through Medibank as I have a members discount. They use Cover More

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Michael,

I am not sure if my comments are helpful.  I researched travel insurances, not only based on cost, but also independent product reviews on line and friend's personal experience when they had to claim. All have product disclosure statements ranging from 45 pages to 100, and the exclusions are hidden in it. I read a few until my head exploded! My thoughts are that we do need it, but hope not having to claim!

My pre-existing  conditions are luckily under control, however I have 10!

For 6 weeks in UK and Europe, Allianz quoted $1,700, others around $2,000, and Insure and go (I think) $4,500! (They call themselves 'competitive'! 🤣).

To me, Allianz seemed the best of a bad lot.

Also a friend had  quite a seriours claim involving hospitalizazion and repatriation and was very happy with Bupa.

As other say, look at the underwriters, a lot of insurers use the same.

All the very best with your search.

    Gianna  n T2D friends

After shopping around I found a wide disparity  to the prices for the medical part of travel insurance. The most priceywas as much as more than twice the lowest even though the same questions were asked and answered.

In the end I bought the lowest one which surprisingly was a face to face purchase.

The best is to shop around

    Thanks all for your contributions

    Regards

Hi Michael, I am glaf you found a good option.

For me, Medibank Private, even with the 20% discount, was still $300 more expensive than Allianz.

Michael, I am T2D and have other pre-existing medical issues but for the last 12 years undertaken overseas travel and been able to obtain full travel insurance covering all my pre-existing conditions but at an extra cost.  Nothing too exhorbitant.  I have used Covermore a couple of times, but most recently used PeopleCare Health Travel Insurance and was actually able to speak to someone.  I also obtained a quote over the phone from Allianz.  It was helpful being able to be guided by a professional rather than booking it all online.  In saying, this your recent hospitalisation could be causing you some grief as far as health insurance goes, to hopefully you can speak to someone to sort it out for you....good luck!

    TKS FOR YOUR INPUT.

Can get cover with the premeds but with recent hospitalisation they become very expensive. Looks like Cover More and Allianz are the top picks
