  • 1.  Have you questioned, why do I get vaccinated with the influenza vaccine? This might help …

The effectiveness of influenza (flu) vaccines has been found to vary between 40-60%. This means that, on average, a vaccinated person is 40-60% less likely to experience the flu leading to a visit to a general practice (GP) or hospital.

These figures come from hospital and health services rather than manufacturers. You may think this figure is lower than desirable; however, if these statistics were about heart conditions, you might happily follow the advice.

When vaccinated, you are less likely to become infected and, if you do become infected, you are more likely to only have a mild dose of the flu.

All I can say is that I've had a flu shot every year since around 1990 and I have never had the flu.

I also haven't had the flu since my first flu Vax in 1984, except for one year in the 90s when I didn't have it because of an availability issue. Prior to 1984 I was getting the flu badly 2 or 3 times a year.

The flu vaccine is specific for different strains and is itself different every year, aimed at the expected major strains expected. And it has NEVER provided protection against Covid, which is not a flu strain and requires regular boosters. I had a bout of Covid last November but was only symptomatic for about 36 hours. I am up to date with Flu, Covid, Pneumonia and the new Shingles vaccines.

I too have had flu injection for many years. I had a really bad attack of flu back in 1990s and decided I would have injection from then on. I have also had injections for all other ailments we can get. I am 75 years old and have travelled several times overseas and done a few cruises without catching anything.
