Private Health Insurance in Australia is dodgy and so is Mark Butler!

Why is it that HCF will only cover Omnipod Dash for 4 years , but HCF have a 5 year cycle?  I had to go to the Private Health Insurance Ombudsman about HCF to get them to give me an answer on this one!  Apparently, I would have to pay for the 5th year myself, as the life of 'all' insulin pumps is 5 years, even though I pointed out it was a 3 day pump!

How the heck does one find out which private health insurance providers have a 4 year cycle, when no private health insurance web sites, or comparison web sites actually say whether they have a 4 or 5 year turn around for standard insulin pumps and throw away pumps like Omnipod Dash.

It doesn't matter how many times you point out to Mark Butler in letter after letter, that insulin pumps have a 4 year warranty, but a 5 year turn around on some private health insurance providers and the pure insanity of this situation.  Mark Butler just doesn't want to admit he made a mistake in putting Omnipod Dash on a 4 year turn around!

Private insurers are nearly all in it for profit. I'm not sure which funds are still mutual (member owned) but with the ageing boomers  (including ageing diabetic boomers like me ) they are facing a growing swell  of increasing costs.  Who covers what for which pumps might be something for the community care people to investigate? Some diabetes educators know which funds covered their patients  and I would imagine it must be of interest to the people who make and sell the pumps.

Yes Michelle. I too found this hitch out about HCF only covering after 5 years. However Medtronic give you a thing called a bridging loan which basically means they waive that 5th year. I have been with Medtronic for 25 years but they do give it to everyone I'm sure.

Janet, I'm also in QCH and have been since 1977 (they had a different name then).  We frequently get comments from health providers about how generous they are.

They began as a NFP, but were recently bought out, so I'm not sure now.

I'm not a pumper and was disappointed that they wouldn't pay a contribution towards a CGM before subsidies.

So far, my payments to them far exceed my claims, but who knows about the future.  I'm occasionally tempted to stop the cover.

I know that feeling of ceasing. BUT I have a rotten auto immune. Lymphoma returned so I guess my useage will outweight expenses. I do not feel I would change to another. My partner gives Plasma every 2 and I use it every 4 weeks. We have to be grateful that we get what we do in this day and age. I marvel at where medicine is today. Take care.

QCH has served our family well since 1977 and now it's just my wife and I.

Like all insurance, we pay the fees in case something bad happens.  The system works because some people don't draw what they pay and some draw more.  That's just the way it is.

When I pay the anual fees, I wonder if we would have been better off to self insure, but my wife and QCH bring me back to level ground.  Modern operations are very expensive.

All we can do is hope that the insurance companies work efficiently.  In theory, the smaller NFP companies should be better because their surpluses are returned to members (i.e. owners).

As members of HCF,  my partner is now on his third pump. It has been made clear  that  a replacement will not be made before five years has elapsed. Current pump is four years old and out of warranty.  It still functions adequately. Should a replacement be required  before 5 years, a pro rata payment will be made by HCF. This seems reasonable.

I'm with Bupa and they fund a new pump for me every 4 years. I am not sure how easy it is to transfer to another health insurer especially given T1D.

Very easy. Too easy in a way. That's why I got caught out. Luckily Medtronic saved me.
