    Hi members,

Tip number 2 in our series of how to feel good and be happy!

Get outside. Just 30 minutes spent in nature can improve symptoms of depression, boost self-esteem and lower blood pressure.

Natural light builds up your serotonin levels and just a few minutes in the sun will help maintain our vitamin D levels. Why not combine exercise and the outdoors for a double whammy?

What's your favourite outdoor activity? Mine is going for a walk around my neighbourhood, for half an hour or so a day. I live close by the Derwent River here in Hobart and have a lovely walking track, around the river in different directions.  The below image was taken in winter, walking on the track towards the Tasman Bridge with SNOW on Mt. Wellington in the background at sunset. It's brisk but beautiful.

How do you enjoy getting outside? - Ange.

    Great post  ladies

Have you heard of this approach: The eyes need to exposed to totally unfiltered UV(no glasses etc.) to excite the retina to stimulate the pineal gland, melatonin/serotonin production and circadian rhythm. The other part of  healthy circadian rhythm is total absence of  artificial light at night, at least when sleeping.   Exposure of the skin is required to turn exuded cholesterol into vitamin D.  Mid morning is considered the best and safest time to get that UV exposure. what are your thoughts?

    Hi Cris,

    Thanks for your reply.

This is exactly why I like to walk first thing in the morning. Apparently so I have been told, early morning light between 7am and 9am is the best for us and have also been told to look towards the sun with eyes closed until you see that red glow behind your eyes and that is supposed to be great for mental health, anxiety/depression. Not sure of the science behind it (maybe something to do with what you have mentioned above), but for me at least, that early morning walk seems to work very well and now we are coming out of those very cold, dark mornings here in Hobart, I will be back at it :)

Totally agree also with the absence of artificial light at night, all my lights must be off to have the best sleep possible.

    Have a great day! Ange.
